5This stuff is a GODSEND.Apr 11, 2005
By Pete M. "PM"
I'm one of those people who's kinda sorta handy, but for some reason I STINK when it comes to measuring & cutting wood, and making it fit in places where it wouldn't normally go. Our attic is just beams & insulation, and until last spring didn't even have an entrance beyond a 3-foot by 4-foot hole in the ceiling.

But my wife and I were determined to use this space for storage. We had a fold-down attic ladder/door installed, but then nothing else was done for almost a whole year after that. The daunting task now awaited us of buying a TON of plywood, measuring it so that it would fit through the door- yet be wide enough to lay over the beams, cutting it all up, and lastly finding a reliable way to secure it to the beams- all the while trying to work in a confined space that was hot as blazes in the summer or bone-chilling in the winter.

That's where Attic Dek came in. I remember someone telling me they had seen or heard about some type of attic flooring at a home/trade show, and I decided to punch 'attic flooring' into Google & see what turned up. Attic Dek was one of the first results, and I knew almost immediately that I wanted it for my own project. The salespeople at Attic Dek were extremely nice, but they first suggested I order one pack of the panels (I needed the more expensive 24"), and see how I liked it. Needless to say, I called back a few weeks later to place my order of 10 more packs.

It's just an ingenious invention- the way the panels interlock with each other makes installation VERY easy- you can even offset the panels if you have one area that's wider than another. They all just fit together perfectly... My attic is now a fully-functional storage space, and I was finally able to put my car in the garage after nearly 2 years of living in my house!

The *only* negative you will come across has to do with the screws. You have to be a bit gentle when driving into the beams, because sometimes the heads of the screws will pop off. I had this happen 2-3 times before I recognized the problem. Be forceful when drilling, but go slow.

5No gripes whatsoever - nearly flawless product.Apr 02, 2007
By Dr. Sam Beckett "Hoping for that last leap home"
I installed this recently and have no qualms at all. Installation was nearly trouble-free, and the product is easily as strong as advertised.

There are three prevailing gripes that are lost on me. First is the complaint that the 16x16 packs are the better value. Maybe so, but if your joists are 24" apart, you must use the 24x16 panels - the 16x16 ones will be too short to fasten to your attic's floor. Second are complaints that uneven spacing between joists will prevent installation. We have some sloppy contractors in our area, and yet, all of the areas I covered with these panels fit perfectly, with the tabs between panels interlocking just fine. Finally, some have said the supplied screws are weak and will break during installation. My 18V drill didn't break a single one, and I installed 20 of these panels (that's 100 screws total) in one setting.

The only improvement I would like to see are pre-cut notches for stubborn wiring. I ran into several tightly secured wires running across joists that could not be moved. I had to cut out notches with a Dremel to accommodate them and put the given panel where I wanted. Not a big deal, but it did slow me down - it's the single difficulty I encountered.

2Zero margin of error. Bad return policy.Feb 10, 2009
By Danny
Shortened version of this review:

-These panels look good and are sturdy, but they probably will not fit your attic. If they took out the notches on the bottom and added more screw holes to allow a better margin of error, they'd have a very nice product.

-The return policy is simply unacceptable.

Long version of this review:

These panels are nice and sturdy, but the underside of the panels have notches to help them fit more snug. That's good except that means that your attic must be built *exactly* the way they designed these, and not all attics are made equal. Only the first row fit for me. My row #2 was 23 inches, and these did not fit. My only hope was to turn them upside down, thus exposing the knee-hurting, eye-sore notches.

The next problem was that the screw holes are in one location. If you lucked up and the panel actually fit correctly, then you still need to cross your fingers in that the screw holes actually line up over the wood. My screw holes on row #2 missed the wood completely.

Anyway, I gave up after I couldn't find a reasonable compromise and decided to return these. I bought two packs for $100 (with $10 shipping included). I emailed them through Amazon to get a refund going. During the course of a week, I found out:

-It says Aisle 77, but these are actually sold by JNK Products.
-They do not refund shipping.
-They said they paid $25 shipping (putting my refund at $75).
-You are required to ship them back on your own expense.

If I wanted to return these to get $75 out of my $100, I'd have to ship it back myself. These are big heavy boxes, and I'd have to pay consumer-to-business prices on UPS, and the best deal I could find was $70:

$100 - $25 (their shipping) - $70 (my shipping) = $5 actual refund.

Even if I had their nice shipping rate:

$100 - $25 (their shipping) - $25 (my shipping) = $50 actual refund.

No thanks. I ended up selling these in town to someone on craigslist and floored my attic with plywood.

Hope that helps somebody!

5looks so much better than boardsDec 02, 2010
By Suzy T. Hall "Lazy homemaker"
I am writing just to counter the previous reviewer. I know he's right about not using your attic for storage BUT we live in a small house and there's a hole in my garage ceiling and I just NEED that space for Christmas decorations. For years we have just had plywood boards over the joists (with NO insulation!), but I bought some of these and we put down 3 1/2 inches of insulation under them. We are covering a small area so the rest of the attic has the high uncompressed insulation you are supposed to have. If you are going to use your attic for storage, this product is easy to install. It is not comfortable to kneel on and in a VERY low space like ours its one-inch height takes up a much-needed one inch of space, but those are the only down-sides I'm aware of. (It looks kind of cool up there right now.)

5Works GreatDec 03, 2010
By R. M. Mayhew
This product worked for me. It fit and installed easily. I ordered online from Lowes and had it delivered to my local store. Based on another review here, if I wanted to return it I knew Lowes would handle it with no problem.

I did have one concern about keeping the insulation rating up in our attic. I wrote the manufacturer and received the reply below.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The R factor for insulation is approximately 3.5 per 1 inch of thickness. In order to have an R factor of 38, recommended for attics, the depth of the insulation needs to be 10 to 12 inches. If you install Attic Dek on top of the ceiling joists do not compress the insulation. The insulation should be loose. Attic Dek is recommended for use over garages or other unheated space. If used over living space one could place poly encased fiber glassbatting over the Attic Dek panels when not in use.
