A Great ProductJul 18, 2011
By ZachE The Harken Hoister works exactly as advertised. I am using it to lift and store a kayak in my garage. The hardware and ropes that come with this product are top quality. You raise and lower your boat using only one rope to control the four attachment points - two slings under the boat, as shown in the photo. The rope has an automatic brake that stops the boat from falling if you let go of the rope. To get the full 10-foot lift with this product, you must have 10-feet of space in front of the ceiling-mounted "rope organizer". Make sure that you can meet all of the installation requirements before buying - the supplier has a "no returns" policy but they will answer your pre-sale questions promptly. You can also call Harken customer service and speak to a knowledgeable person located in the U.S. The instruction manual can be downloaded from the Harken website.
You can find cheaper hoisting products, but they will have the following problems: 1) Use cheap rope that you will need to replace; 2) Requiring pulling on two ropes simultaneously to raise/lower your boat; 3) Not have an automatic brake; 4) Use only two attachment points on the ceiling and not raise your boat high enough to walk under it.
If you cannot meet the installation requirements to get the full 10-foot lift, you have the option to lower your boat onto saw horses or tripods (not included). Under very specific circumstances, you could raise/lower the boat directly from your car. But that would depend on a number of factors, including the size of your garage and the height of your garage door. If you drive a SUV, you probably cannot clear the top of your garage door with a boat on your roof.

Uncommon qualityApr 04, 2008

Just what you'd expect from a company that makes hardware for sailboats -- great design and quality materials. Couldn't be better. It's a little fiddly to get all the lines and attachment points setup right, but once it's all adjusted, it's simple to use and very secure. Holds my 18' canoe firmly against the rafters of my patio roof.

hanging a kayakJan 09, 2007

Once the system was up it worked great. The directions were a little confusing and I had to read it several times before I felt comfortable in moving forward. The bolts and screws seem to be a little long - the screws to go into the 2X6 were 2 inches or longer whereas a 2X4 is only 1.5 inches wide. The recommend bolts into the ceiling beams seem to also be too long (1/2 to 1 inch too long) unless you have thick ceiling. Once up - it works great.

Hoist for rowing shellMay 06, 2010
By bob gillman This product is great for storing a boat in a garage. The instructions are very good. It took me about 4 hours to install it in the ceiling of the garage. It works as advertised. Lowering or raising my 70 lb. boat is very easy. I would recommend this to others.

worth the moneyOct 29, 2011

After reading the reviews on some of the other brands I decided on this one, although pricier, well worth it. The features of having the boat hang flat and even, the emergency stop on the ropes and the higher quality hardware and straps were what made me order this one. I cant say it was easy to install since I didnt install in myself. i had a friend help me who's super-handy (he already custom built one for his garage.) Heres what he commented on: The "toughest" part (not so bad) was the rigging of the ropes in the pulley. He said the direction were pretty clear but not as clear as they could have been. He put it up in about 2 hours max including tweaking a few things. After he finished he said that it was pretty SLICK and he really liked it. He said it had some great features that his homebuilt rigging lacked. Its working great for me and it was worth the price!
